What actually drives the price
Two suits can carry the same number and be entirely different objects. Knowing where the money goes is the only way to compare quotes on this island meaningfully.
The cloth
Usually the largest single variable. A serviceable tropical-weight wool and a fine Super 150s from a well-known mill are not close in cost — and neither is a mistake. One is for a suit you will wear weekly, the other for a suit you will wear at a wedding.
Worth knowing: the Super number describes how fine the wool fibre is, not how good or how cool the cloth is. Super 100s–130s are robust, hold their shape and take daily wear. Super 150s and above are gorgeous and delicate — they crease more readily and wear through faster. In this climate a high-twist Super 110s outperforms a smooth Super 150s every time.
The construction
The invisible one, and the reason most price comparisons are meaningless. A fully canvassed jacket has a floating horsehair layer stitched in; a fused jacket has interfacing glued to the cloth. Fused is substantially cheaper and quicker, stiffer to wear, warmer in the heat, and in tropical humidity the adhesive degrades and the lapel bubbles.
If one quote on this island is dramatically lower than another, this is usually why. Ask which you are being quoted for.
The hand-work and the fittings
Hand-finished buttonholes, a hand-padded lapel roll, a hand-set collar — each is time, and time is most of a tailor's cost. None of it changes how a suit looks on day one; all of it changes how it looks in year three. A quote with one fitting and a quote with two are not the same offer.
Five questions that make two quotes comparable
- Is the jacket fused, half-canvassed or fully canvassed?
- What does the cloth weigh, and which mill is it from?
- How many fittings are included, and what does another cost?
- Is the body lined, half-lined or unlined?
- What happens if it does not fit properly once I am home?
A tailor who answers all five plainly is telling you something useful regardless of the number at the end. One who deflects is telling you something too.
Where to economise, and where not to
Worth economising on
The mill. A mid-range cloth in the right weight and weave serves you better here than a prestigious name in the wrong weight. Also the number of pieces — order two shirts, wear them, then order the rest.
Not worth economising on
Construction and fittings. A fused jacket saves money once and costs you the garment. Skipping the fitting saves an afternoon and produces a suit you never reach for.
The most common regret we hear is from people who bought a rushed suit elsewhere in Phuket and are now having it altered or replaced. The cheapest suit is the one you actually wear, not the one you replace.
Why we publish prices at all
Most tailors here do not, and the reason is usually that the number is decided after they have read you. Published starting prices remove that, and they are one of the few checks a visitor can apply before walking in — along with a fixed address and verifiable reviews. Why do you publish prices?
Because hidden prices and street touts are what give Phuket tailoring its bad name. Publishing honest starting figures lets you know what to expect before you walk in, and it means the conversation starts with what you want made rather than with what you can be persuaded to pay. The figures here are starting points rather than a fixed menu, and the exact quote is confirmed before any cutting begins.
What changes the final price?
The cloth and the construction, mainly, and then the number of pieces. Cloth is usually the largest single variable. Construction is the invisible one: a fused jacket is cheaper and quicker than half canvas, and full canvas costs more again. That single difference explains most of the gap between two quotes on this island that look otherwise identical, which is why it is worth asking any shop which one its figure covers.
Do you take deposits?
Yes. A deposit confirms your order and secures the cloth, and the balance is due at the final fitting rather than up front. The deposit exists because cloth is cut to your measurements and cannot be sold to anyone else, not as a commitment device.
