Choosing the cloth

Choose the weight first, then the weave, then the fibre — that order gets you a wearable suit even if you never learn what fresco is. Cloth is also the largest single variable in the price and the one you control most directly. It is also where suits bought on holiday most often go wrong, because a cloth that counts as a summer weight in Europe is frequently too heavy here.

Aim for the 210–260g range. That is enough body to hang properly and light enough to wear outdoors at midday. The 280–340g "four-season" cloth sold across most of Europe is comfortable in air conditioning and punishing on a beach, and anything above 300g is winter cloth.

Weave matters as much as weight. A high-twist worsted has the yarn spun hard before weaving, leaving gaps you can feel breathe, and it resists creasing stubbornly. Wool-linen blends give you most of linen’s coolness with far less of its collapse. Pure linen is the coolest cloth there is and creases by design — accept that or choose something else. We will hand you the books and tell you which ones are wrong for what you have described, which is which cloth handles the heat in more detail than a fitting allows.

Construction, and what it changes

Between the cloth and the lining sits a layer that gives the chest its shape and the lapel its roll. It is invisible once the jacket is finished and it is the biggest quality difference you cannot see.

Half canvas stitches a floating canvas through the chest and lapel and fuses the panels below, which is our standard build and the practical minimum in this climate. Full canvas runs the stitched layer through the whole front, moulds to you over years, and starts at the Signature tier. Fused construction glues interfacing to the cloth throughout — cheaper, quicker, stiffer, warmer, and in tropical humidity the adhesive degrades until the lapel bubbles.

Whichever you are quoted, here or anywhere, the construction is nameable in one sentence and we name it in writing before a deposit. The physical test that settles it in five seconds is in what canvas construction changes.

The details you choose

A made suit differs from a bought one mostly in the number of decisions that were yours. These are the ones worth thinking about before you arrive, and none of them is an upcharge dressed as a choice.

• Lapel. Notch reads business and is the safe default; peak reads formal and makes narrow shoulders look broader. Width should follow your build rather than the season.
• Vents. Two side vents let the jacket sit properly when you put your hands in your pockets or sit down. A single centre vent is more traditional and less forgiving. No vent is cooler in theory and creases badly in practice.
• Pockets. Flapped is standard; jetted is dressier; patch pockets make a jacket read casual and work well on linen and unstructured builds. A ticket pocket is a detail, not a mistake.
• Lining. The single biggest comfort decision in this climate. Half-lined or unlined through the back beats a full lining every time in humidity, and it costs nothing extra.
• Cuffs. Working buttonholes look right and make future sleeve alterations harder. Non-working cuffs keep the sleeve length adjustable for years. Worth deciding deliberately rather than by default.
• Trouser finish. Plain hem or turn-ups, flat front or pleats, and where the waistband actually sits. Pleats are cooler because they add room, which matters more here than the fashion argument does.
• Buttons and thread. Horn, corozo or mother-of-pearl, and whether the buttonholes are stitched in the cloth colour or a contrast.

A suit built for the office rather than an occasion makes these choices differently, and that set is laid out in business and formal suits.

Fittings and how long it takes

Two to three fittings is standard. The first takes the measurements and confirms the cut, the second checks the garment on your body and marks the adjustments, and a third is added when the fit needs one rather than as an upsell.

Most pieces are ready in 24 to 48 hours over those two to three fittings, and that figure is published rather than promised into every circumstance. The busy months change how easily the appointments can be booked rather than how long a garment takes. What it will not absorb is a full-canvas build, a cloth we do not hold and have to order in, or a fit that needs a third fitting because of how your shoulders sit.
