How long before the wedding you need to start

Count backwards from the ceremony rather than forwards from today: a wedding starts at a fixed date that will not move. How long that needs depends on the garment, the size of the party and what is already booked, so send your ceremony date and your arrival date and the answer comes back before you commit.

• The ceremony. Nothing is collected on the morning of the wedding. Leave the day before clear.
• Final fitting. The finished suit is confirmed on the body, with the shoes that will be worn. Small adjustments are still possible here and structural ones are not.
• Second fitting. The corrections from the first fitting are checked, and the lengths are marked.
• First fitting. The garment is deliberately incomplete so the shape is still open. This is the appointment that decides whether the suit fits.
• Measuring and cloth. A full measurement session for each person, posture noted, cloth and details chosen.
• So: a party needs longer than a groom alone. A shorter trip means giving something up, and the honest thing is to say which before you commit.

If your date is inside two weeks

It is usually still possible, and the conversation should start with what gets dropped rather than with a yes. Inside ten days a full-canvas build is out, an unusual cloth we do not hold is out, and a third fitting is out. Inside a week the sensible answers are a simpler garment, a smaller party, or alterations to suits people already own. Tell us the ceremony date first and we will say plainly what is achievable against it, including when the answer is that it is not.

If you are still at home

Then the honest answer is that this page is not yet for you. A suit cannot be cut for a body that is not in the room, and buying one at home to wear at a Phuket wedding is a reasonable decision that a shop here cannot improve on from a distance. What is worth doing now is booking the first appointment for your arrival date, so the fittings sit at the start of your trip rather than at the end of it.

The groom's suit

The groom is photographed more than anyone else present and stands still while it happens, which is a harder test of a garment than an ordinary day of wear.

• Fit before everything. Shoulders, chest and jacket length are what a photograph shows. A cloth nobody will notice on a suit that fits beats an interesting cloth on one that does not.
• A detail that separates you from the party rather than a different colour. A waistcoat the groomsmen do not wear, a peak lapel against their notch, a different tie.
• Something wearable afterwards, if the budget is doing two jobs. A mid-tone suit in a good cloth has a life after the wedding; a novelty one does not.
• Comfort through a long day, which in this climate means an unlined or half-lined jacket and an open weave.

Cloth that survives a beach ceremony

Four things decide whether the groom is comfortable at four in the afternoon.

• An open weave, 210 to 260g. Light enough to wear outdoors, heavy enough to hang properly.
• High-twist wool over linen. It resists creasing and holds a press through a day of photographs. Linen creases permanently, which reads as character on a guest and as untidiness in a formal portrait.
• Mid tones over dark. In bright sun a black suit flattens into a silhouette.
• Nothing with polyester in it, whatever the stated weight. How each of these behaves over a full day is set out in cloth for a tropical climate.

Morning suit, lounge suit or a jacket and trousers

Three levels of formality, and the venue decides rather than tradition imported from a colder country.

• Morning suit. Formal daywear, rare at a beach ceremony, and usually both overdressed and uncomfortable in the heat.
• Lounge suit. An ordinary two-piece, and what most Phuket weddings actually use. The safe answer.
• Jacket and contrasting trousers. The least formal of the three, and right at a genuinely casual ceremony, particularly in linen.

Groomsmen, and keeping a group consistent

A party is a logistics problem before it is a tailoring problem, and it is the part nobody writes down.

• 1. Fix the cloth first, not the size. One cloth across the party is what makes a group photograph read as deliberate. Everything else can vary.
• 2. Decide the cut once. Lapel, vents, button stance and trouser finish agreed for the whole party, so that men of different builds still look like one group.
• 3. Measure each man rather than ordering sizes. A consistent cloth cut to each body photographs far better than identical suits on very different builds.
• 4. Give one person the decisions. A party where every man chooses his own lining and buttons takes three times as long and looks less consistent, not more.
• 5. Book the fittings as a block. Two appointments for the whole party is a manageable ask; two appointments each, scattered, is not.

Measuring men who arrive on different days

This is the actual problem with a destination party, and it has a workable answer. The party rarely lands together — the groom arrives early, two groomsmen a week later, one the night before.

• Fix the cloth and the cut once, at the start, with whoever is already here.
• Measure each man on the day he arrives and slot him into that same specification, rather than waiting for the party to be measured together.
• Give the latest arrivals the simplest builds, because they have the fewest days to work with.
• Send the arrival dates with the wedding date. Then the schedule is planned rather than discovered.

Fittings at your villa or hotel

The fittings come to you, at the villa or the hotel. A wedding party cannot easily travel to a shop — there are dinners, other guests, people arriving, and a schedule that belongs to somebody else.

What changes what a suit costs

Four things move the figure for a wedding, and the last one is the one people forget.

• The cloth. The largest single variable, and the one you control most directly.
• The construction. How much of the jacket front is stitched rather than fused.
• The pieces. A waistcoat, a second trouser, or a separate outfit for a welcome dinner each price separately.
• The size of the party. Not a discount question but a scheduling one: more men means more appointments, and appointments are time.
